Habituate

distinguishable dance music only!

Tonight Orange County is re-visited by the crew that kicked its ass every Saturday night from ’04 to ’08 at Avalon Bar. They bring with them a heaping helping of debaucherous disco & dance rock.

The original crew Scotty Coats, 2000 MAN (dirtylo), & DJ Poppa are teaming up with GARTH, DJ SPUN & Buck and delivering you two rooms of music, 6 DJ’s, an extensive record collection of classics and oddities, and an assortment of Orange County residents who haven’t had much of an alternative since the crew moved on. People are going to be antsy to get the party moving to say the least.

Located at Detroit Bar. Saturday March19th 9-2am
843 West 19th Street
Costa Mesa, CA 92627

About the DF Crew, DJ Spun, Buck and Garth

“NEWS? THE WORLD IS ROUND. ONCE UPON A TIME THEY TRIED TO KILL DISCO BY BURNING RECORDS IN A GIANT PILE IN SOME STRANGE MID EVIL FASHION. IT DIDN’T WORK. IT ONLY BLEW MAD NASTY BLACK SMOKE INTO THE AIR AND POLLUTED THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE EVEN MORE THAN IT ALREADY WAS. UMMMMMMM? DOI!”

Scotty Coats…

can definitely be considered one of the individuals who made sure those quack jobs didn’t successfully lead their disco crushing crusade by firstly not attending this disco record burning and secondly by re-envisioning the genre with his own perspective. Scotty has relased on beloved labels such as Rong and DFA. Here is one of his releases on Rong.

.

Scotty Coats & Wes the Mes – Double Fisted (Prins Thomas Disko Mix)

.

DJ Poppa…

relocated from the Bay area in ’04 and made contact with Scotty and dirtylo. All three of them had their own separate nights at Avalon Bar before joining forces. Collectively they were the driving force behind the disco scene in OC. There was a void and they simply stepped up and filled it. They filled it damn well too, and to be honest the void hasn’t been completely filled since they left.

.

2000man (dirty-lo)…

a Huntington Beach resident and and long-time purveyor of such highly distinctive sounds, especially in Orange county. Dirty-lo made his home at Avalon Bar in it’s infancy and helped create the scene which was focused around the DF crew.

Now leaning toward The 2000 man he has always been slightly unhinged and is known to take chances in sound. Usually you can find him unleashing a noise that leaves a person wondering exactly how to categorize it. Around 19th St. and beyond, you could say dirty is mostly famous for his love of the the Jack n Coke with a Corona backer. As for The 2000 Man, well he just loves to pick up needles in the middle of a track and fall to the floor laughing about his lack of tact with his friends.

Somewhere in between becoming a 2000 Man, Dirty helped Anne Lee put together her BLOW UP L.A. parties. He had a partnership in the first few parties and helped pave the way for a take over. Also you may remember a tough little monthly in L.A. created by dirty & the DF “Hotwire My Heart.”

He has a collaboration with Scotty Coats and Wes the Mes releasing on Rong and Smash Hits. He can be found on the Imperial Dub label as part of Los Sonadores from eons ago. Also if you dig deep enough he is also found on Soulmine with Los Sonadores.

.

West Indian Girl – Solar Eyes (It’s basically crunk rock mix)

.

DJ Spun…

is owner of Rong Records and is flying out from NYC for the night. Has released on Whatchawannado, here is one of my favorites of the moment. (No more available info at time of writing sorry!)

DJ Spun – Straight to the Bar

.

Buck…

“I have a record collection and a personality disorder; so I’m a DJ.” The Long Beach resident has been playing out his record collection and showcasing his personality disorder to people for twenty years now. He has played from New York to Beijing.

.

Garth…

who is a favorite amongst the crew and now lives in Los Angeles is the special guest of the night. Garth left his home in London when the acid house scene was cracked down upon and re-located to San Francisco in the early nineties. He joined up with Jeno, Markie & Thomas Bullock and together they formed Wicked. Armed with a custom Turbo Sound rig they toured in a ’47 Greyhound bus and played out their mix of psychedelic, funky, soulful, disco tinged electronic music. They hosted moonlight beach parties and afterhours clubs in SF and the Bay and even had their Turbo sound set up at Burning Man 1995. Later the Greyhound served another purpose, the inspiration for Garth’s label. In ’98 the label launched and by the third release the label had already made an impression.

.

In recent years, along with extensive touring in Australia and consistently DJing in the USA, Garth has teamed up with James Glass, a San Franciscan DJ, and launched the Golden Goose imprint. The label is a limited press re-edit label that finds forgotten disco and dance rock and cuts them for repressing. He has recently played at a new weekly night in Los Angeles called the Bottom Floor. And has a new monthly revolving residency at The Original Art Bar Friday night weekly in Los Angeles.
