To be perfectly honest, Chromeo never really got me all the way there, if you know what I mean. But I really appreciate this re-work by the Slow it Down guys, takes a cheese ball pop song and puts the right kind of moodiness in it. Worth a play!

I decided to get in touch with Henry Maldonado after playing his record “Trial By Fire.” I thought to myself, “I need more from whoever this person is,” so I did an online discogs search and found out the man behind the wax is Henry Maldonado, a house music veteran of over 20 years and one of the first producers on the famous label Strictly Rhythm. I ended up with a lot more than just more music to listen to. I was given the opportunity to pick his brain, and now for those of you curious, you can get an insider’s viewpoint on early house music in the 90’s from one of NYC’s finest!

The biggest pleasure in having this blog is getting the opportunity to showcase the creative people that reside in my stomping grounds. Ant Casillas is a young producer hailing from Long Beach, California who I have been consistently watching out for because of his ability to push his sound into new and deeper territory. This particular tune stuck out to me quite a bit, it reminded me of that same sound that Simoncino is so well known for.

.

I asked Anthony about his latest tune and got a heaping helping of insight, here is little of what he had to say,

“I’ve always been about the deep groove and atmospheric texture but I can never ignore thick bass-lines and percussion patterns, with Ant’s Angle what I did was I decided to combine the two and include a vocal sample to give it that techno-house dance-floor feel. That sample “get you in my pores” & “eat me up” is actually an original recording by me but it’s a lyric from the track Bear Hug by The 2 Bears. What I did with that was recorded the lyric with my voice and transposed it to be lower and added simple delay fx along with some light re-verb.”

.

Anthony is working on coming out with an EP which he will entitle “City By the Beach” out of respect for his hometown. For more of his work and some free downloads follow him on soundcloud here.

Future Boogie is truly investing in the future with Crackazat, a relatively young and unknown producer from Sweden who works as a bassist and studied jazz in the UK. Crackazat isn’t a high profile globe trotting DJ and the truth of the matter is that high shelf life music isn’t created by producers who travel the world and quantize samples on laptops in their spare time. So kudos to Future Boogie for showcasing talent instead of grabbing the latest hot name! Crackazat is on the same tip of production style as Floating Points, which is great for me because sometimes I struggle to fill in the blanks after playing a Floating Points record and now I know exactly who to turn to to keep the jazzy spastic beats going in a set.
