distinguishable dance music only!

For those of you who don’t already know who Ron Hardy is, he is one of the most influential Chicago house DJs of the 80’s and an innovator in the mixing style of house music. His edits at times were rough, but they always captured the best of a track. Ron used his looping skills to drive the dance floor into a frenzy, his mixes can be quite psychedelic at times, especially considering the bulk of his material was disco samples, something far from psychedelia.

A lot has been said about Acid House. For those of us too young to have been there it remains in our psyche as a fabled era. Many claims have been made that all that is outstanding in today’s dance music culture was created back then, in the short time period of roughly only 4 years. Habituate OC has a primary source from an Englishman who now resides in Huntington Beach, CA. Martin Worster a.k.a. Han the DJ, puts together a fresh mix of the records he collected from ’89 to ’92 and lets us know about how he viewed the days of ACID HOUSE.

I had the pleasure of putting down a set for Plastic Love out in Los Angeles. Plastic Love is comprised of Bas Elgharib and Jimmy Maheras, two very down to earth dudes with an ear for all that is plastic and dripping with love! I put down my flavor of distinguishable dance music as always, I made sure to represent OC so I played Steven Ryback’s remix of Bill Withers and Knoe1’s edit of “Where’s My Party People.” I also made sure to represent those from abroad who have showed me some love so I finished out with Jay Shepheard and Tad Wily’s latest track “Hefty Done Me Right” and then finished it out with Jay’s edit of “The Beloved Sun Rising.”

LA based husband and wife duo, 100% Silk, drop some quirky dance grooves for music site Fader. I don’t usually sit and listen to a mix all the way through, instead I skim through to find interesting parts, but this one kept me engaged enough to calm myself, sit back and listen. For more on 100% Silk check out their label feature on Fader.

Q: What style of music do you produce?

A: “I’m not a big fan of genres… but if I had to choose I’d love it to be Swamp Pop, because it’s the coolest genre name out there, but I’m afraid it rather fits Beatport’s ‘Indie Dance’ description. Or you can think of it as a mess done right.”

.

Q: When it comes to music production, what era’s and artists do you look to for inspiration?

A: “No artists in particular, really. I tend to look for single tunes that have something unusual or inspiring in them. There’s plenty of little gems around that don’t have any important artist name written all over it, but have awful loads of character. I’ve got a soft spot for late 70’s Post Punk/No Wave stuff, early 80’s House, or Rap/Boogie tunes and various fusions of these. I’m also a big fan of weird things and small imperfections; vocals out of tune, distorted hi-hats, noisy guitar cables, etc. These things often add up to the uniqueness of stuff, which to some degree gone missing when people started to produce preliminarily on digital setups.”
