This Thursday, Thomas PM returns from NYC after his gig at Jacques Renault’s renowned Let’s Play House Parties where he shared the decks with Throne of Blood label head James Friedman. Thomas will be joined by Headinghome Recordings label head Leonard Donjuan, aka Hawkeye, and myself. Anything goes, as far as the record selection is concerned. But do expect quality!

Over at Mesa you got…

Funkmaster Dâm Funk will be turning Mesa into a shrine for the spaced out cosmic electric funk that he has collected and curated throughout his journeys into time and space. As you might have guessed from the flyer, it’s a good idea to bring your 3D glasses. This is the only way to experience the sound to color synesthesia of Mr. Dâm Funk’s records. Be warned if you aren’t prepared you will remain in the two dimensional realm of predictability.

Here are some full length tracks from Dâm Funk courtesy of Habituate.

“The Telephone Call”

“I appreciate My Life”

And over at Focus you got…

I will wholeheartedly say my favorite nights at Focus have been the nights where locals takeover. Lately I have been more and more impressed by what OC has to offer, Cocoe & Massa are two of those offerings.

.

We are in luck, Cocoe just recently updated his soundcloud with a wide range of productions and collaborations. Here are some that stood out to me.

“Just Dance” (deep instrumental arrangement and vocal work on this)

“Brothas on Music” (luv the synth in this one)

Steve Massa is part of the Heartbeat crew and soundsystem, you might also remember Brian Kott, another Heartbeat member from one of the last Hometown Hero nights. (First time I caught Brian play some tunes he played some Metro Area). These guys are holding it down when it comes to that late night, lethargic, and elcectic house and tech sound. If my memory serves me correct, I think when I was at an Absurd underground my friend ran into Massa and got a mix cd, I’ll see if I can get a hold of that one. No worries though, here is a mix from Massa for right now.

“Live at Secret Cinema”

This Thursday is lookin’ good for a night of record rotations hosted by Ubiquity Record’s own Thomas PM. If you know Ubiquity Records you know they are the epitome of a well rounded record label. They keep their taste well in tune with the vast under current of music and keep an eye out for pressing everything from jazz to beats to minimal dubbed out techno. Listen to the release NOMO – Rocket #9 [UR12202] and see for yourself how eclectic the sound is. That particular release has the massive Matthew Dear remix on it from 2006. If your head was wrapped around the happenings of Circo Loco DC10 you remember this track. I definitely have had my fill of minimal but this one remains the stand out track of the time period for me.

.

You won’t be hearing minimal techno being played out here, although I have dropped Matthew’s NuTones remix there one night. I’ll be playing my 90’s house records, this particular night. I’ve got my thoughts swimming around the sounds of Todd Terry and the NYC Sound. I have been keeping these records mostly to myself and only dropping a garagey tune here and there, but this time around it’s going to be the staple of my set.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band

Over at Mesa this Wednesday (April 27th) the Phenomenal Handclap Band SOUNDSYTEM will be guests at Scotty Coat’s summer season residency. The 8 person band will leave their instruments at home and instead put their records to good use. The band’s live act is known for their enveloping stage presence and eclectic blend of disco, rock, soul, and psychedelia. Granted their DJ set won’t have the bonus entertainment of watching live musicians but if the music selections for their DJ set is anything like their musical selection for their blog my best guess is their DJ set will be something definitely worth hearing. I’ll be hoping to hear them play some of their own tunes as well. One of their biggest tunes and one of my favorites, “You’ll Disappear,” has got some great remixes by Prins Thomas and Jaques Renault. Mesa is rarely a dancing spot but I hope they drop this one and people really let loose and get down.
