A fellow countryman, a brother from another Greek Mother, Cocoe Tsimahidis is proudly putting on the 14th year anniversary of Abstract Workshop! Cocoe is bringing in the man who he considers his biggest influence, J-Rocc, and also Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf. Spinning alongside them will be Cocoe, Scotty Coats, Josh One & Mr. Hyder.

.

This is the first event I have featured where the music is steeped in hip-hop influences, I personally never sought out hip-hop records or did much solo listening of my own, but I always appreciated coming across a talented turntabilist. Listening to a well versed DJ put down an instrumentalist hip-hop set, I get the chance to hear funk, disco, and boogie cut up and rearranged like I’ve never heard before. J-Rocc is a perfect example of how a well versed DJ cuts across all boundaries, he may be considered a hip-hop DJ but he knows more about disco & soul than I do for sure. He puts down edits that stand up to any of the disco-edit big guns out there. Have a listen for yourself.

I swear I don’t listen to music and think to myself “Oh that’s a cover of the so-and-so-group from 19-somethin-somethin, and as a matter of fact it was also redone by so-and-so.”

But sometimes I do figure out where music overlaps and borrows from each other and this is one instance I got excited about.

In this instance I was turned on to some good tunes while listening online to some selections by a couple of DJ’s in the OC and LB area. DJ Cocoe and Conor Rogan.

Cocoe shared “Dub Be Good to Me” by Beats International on FB and then only moments later when I played Conor’s mix on soundcloud I hear The Revenge’s version. Pretty strange that I hear two different versions of a song one after another just by coincidence.

At first I thought, “Oh cool The Revenge sampled this track that Cocoe just shared.” But I did some more research and found out that on The Revenge’s version the female vocalist of Crazy Penis, Danielle Moore, did her own rendition of the original by the S.O.S Band, “Just Be good To Me.” Hearing all of these different versions and finding out how many talented artists are connected by this one song is so great to me, I love when the pieces fall together like that!

Here are all three versions, all of them are great. 🙂

Over at Mesa you got…

Located at:
725 Baker Street
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Funkmaster Dâm Funk will be turning Mesa into a shrine for the spaced out cosmic electric funk that he has collected and curated throughout his journeys into time and space. As you might have guessed from the flyer, it’s a good idea to bring your 3D glasses. This is the only way to experience the sound to color synesthesia of Mr. Dâm Funk’s records. Be warned if you aren’t prepared you will remain in the two dimensional realm of predictability.

Here are some full length tracks from Dâm Funk courtesy of Habituate.

And over at Focus you got…

I will wholeheartedly say my favorite nights at Focus have been the nights where locals takeover. Lately I have been more and more impressed by what OC has to offer, Cocoe & Massa are two of those offerings.

.

We are in luck, Cocoe just recently updated his soundcloud with a wide range of productions and collaborations. Here are some that stood out to me.

“Just Dance” (deep instrumental arrangement and vocal work on this)

“Brothas on Music” (luv the synth in this one)

.

Steve Massa is part of the Heartbeat crew and soundsystem, you might also remember Brian Kott, another Heartbeat member from one of the last Hometown Hero nights. (First time I caught Brian play some tunes he played some Metro Area). These guys are holding it down when it comes to that late night, lethargic, and elcectic house and tech sound. If my memory serves me correct, I think when I was at an Absurd underground my friend ran into Massa and got a mix cd, I’ll see if I can get a hold of that one. No worries though, here is a mix from Massa for right now.

“Live at Secret Cinema”
