A lot has been said about Acid House. For those of us too young to have been there it remains in our psyche as a fabled era. Many claims have been made that all that is outstanding in today’s dance music culture was created back then, in the short time period of roughly only 4 years. Habituate OC has a primary source from an Englishman who now resides in Huntington Beach, CA. Martin Worster a.k.a. Han the DJ, puts together a fresh mix of the records he collected from ’89 to ’92 and lets us know about how he viewed the days of ACID HOUSE.

This month we have a dope selector who is known as the champion of the HOT AC sound. Ritesh, vinyl enthusiast and the purveyor of deep jam sessions that only the Adult Contemporary imprint puts out, will be joining residents Steven Petropoulos, Mikey C and Han the DJ.

This month we are looking to new selectors for the dance floor. Guests have been a part of the plan for ZAP! and it is now coming together. Knoe 1 is what you could call a seasoned veteran when it comes to the Orange County circuit. He had a long running event at Proof Bar called Alive N Direct, DJed alongside the Double Fisted Crew and the old ZAP! crew as well. Things come full circle as they say and now Knoe 1 is making his way back over to Avalon Bar for a highly anticipated set of disco cuts and dance deviations. And he is much more than just a DJ, take a listen to some of his personal edits.

This Saturday, July 9th, the tracks locked in the grooves of our records are amplified to full effect at our humble home the Avalon Bar. This is a night for Dancers, it is all about getting together and fulfilling these records intention: rhythmic movements amongst good company. Our record collections are ever expanding, many corners of the dance music genome will be explored!

I personally have been searching for some good extended jamming tunes to play out, I love the kind of tunes that take over and require only a gentle finesse when it comes to mixing, LET THE TRACKS DO THE TALKING!! Also I put Canyons – Fire Eyes EP in my crate in honor of the event taking place the night before our night; Leo Thomson of Canyons visits from Australia and is joining the Double Fisted Crew back in their original home, Avalon Bar. 😉

An account of a Friday night at Avalon Bar with the DJ’s from ZAP

(4th Friday’s of the month dubbed Black Licorice)

Avalon bar is known for some of the most random and unpredictable nights in Costa Mesa. It’s an environment where the staff, entertainers and patrons don’t force a good time but instead let it come along on its own. It allows for creative conditions and it results in some interesting nights on 19th St. Many a night the crowd stumbles in from Detroit or out of their homes in near by neighborhoods, perhaps out for the infamous brown bag special or just to avoid crowds and cliches at other spots. They usually haven’t a clue as to who is hosting or if a band or DJ is playing. If the Russian beer or the occasional $1 PBR’s are in stock. If the music will be garbage or like nothing they have ever heard before. Granted some nights just don’t hit that climactic peak, but that’s the point, people are aware of that fact and so when it does turn into a good night it’s unexplainable and it’s truly special.
